Larpweekend 6 - 2009.11.06-08 írta: Sir_Thomas
I would like to summarize our experiences about the Larpweekend which was held in Brno (Czech Republic) this weekend. As you may know the Ostromjáték Egyesület (SiegeGame Association) was one of the partners of Court of Moravia who organized the Larpweekend Festival. This was the first time when the event gone to an international level with Visegrad4 countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary). Dii (from the Gloria team) and myself traveled to Brno and prepared a chamber style larp to the players. It was held in English, so we had to find the way to smoothly communicate with them and also create a game which may be fully enjoyed by all of us.
We had several ideas which could be organized, but finally Dii gave a very powerful story and game mechanism which immediately decided the question. It was called Babel.
Babel: In the near future a virus (called Babel) spread through the whole Earth. It`s a brain disease which makes you forget how to use words. A young scientist discovers a solution which helps people to communicate, but he needs to verify his theory. He organizes a scientific meeting with his former co-workers where some unexpected events happen and the way of the new communication should prove itself in critical circ;umstances.
We held the game three times at the weekend. It was quite fascinating to see people struggling with communication and their feelings which could not be played out because of the lack of spoken conversation. It was a very intensive experience to see them play: using wordcards, searching the right words desperately, saying very strong and short sentences and being unable to answer them properly as they had not yet the answer. The conflict of personal goals and the need of cooperation established a wide variety of actions and reactions which led the game into a real joy or a desperate situation. The outcome of the game fully depended on the players and it was sometimes hard to bear not helping them in their exposed and hopeless struggle. I think that it is nearly impossible to translate or even understand the hardness of reaching goals without the most important communication source, the speak. You should try out what I am writing about before creating an opinion or judgment about the situation.
Our teams played very well, we were surprised by the will and ability to adapt and the attitude of our players. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to be with them. They put their trust in us and respected our imagination and game mechanics and gave us meaningful feedback on Babel.
The team of Court of Moravia was a professional host and led the whole event smoothly, so we had no major problems. That`s a big deal I can assure you as the chain of events has been separated in 5-6 places which could be a real burden to any organizer group. They solved all issues quickly and without any complaints so respect to you CoM!
We had lots of serious and funny discussions with the members of org. teams and the participants so the rest of the time was a delight. I am pretty sure that the Czech beers are great but I never drink alcohol so I missed this part. :-D
By the way, we had a nice party with beautiful girls, tons of alcohol and a dance floor to loosen the tension.
I would like to say thank you to all of you, especially to
- CoM for organizing the weekend
- Lorgi for the really useful help at the first session
- Jiri for the good suggestions and also for the lead and help
- our players on Babel
- Veronika, Ester, Jezevec, Jiri and all others for the dance
- and Melissa (from the 3rd session) for inviting us to the final lunch and her gentle soul creating a real atmosphere of friendship and courtesy (I don`t even know her name!)
If you would have any feedback, opinion or you just want to say `goodbye` (or `go to Hell`), please don`t hesitate to send me an e-mail to sirthomas@rpg.hu
Thank you guys, it was a real fun!
Telling a JOKE:

Ghost of Dina haunts John (her killer) to make him commiting suicide.

It was not easy to arrange all cards and put together the right words which may help him to reaching his goals.

Adam and Eve finally are close together with the hope of a better future.

Wordcard communism

The power of cooperation

Dii at the last moments of the game. He collects the best and most powerful sentences of the actual group on paper.

We had a final lunch with some really kind people. That was our afterparty as we had to leave in sunday afternoon.
